1. Summary
IHRC has received reports that Imam Jamil has been diagnosed with a life-threatening condition and needs immediate medical attention. We request campaigners to write to the prison warden pressurizing for his immediate release or transfer to a medical facility where his condition can be promptly addressed.
2. Background
Imam Jamil Al-Amin (formerly H. Rap Brown) has been suffering from severe medical issues during the past few months of his incarceration for a crime he maintains he never committed. For more details on his campaign, please visit this link. He has been diagnosed with a life-threatening condition and needs to be moved to a medical facility immediately to receive proper treatment.
As campaigners may be aware, Imam Jamil had already been suffering from continuous 23-hour solitary confinement, simply by virtue of being housed at USP Florence ADMAX, which has also been dubbed the “Guantanamo Bay of the mainland” and “a clean version of hell”. It is meant for prisoners who are ‘deemed the most dangerous and in need of the tightest control’.
In early 2009, Imam Jamil Al-Amin was placed in Special Housing Unit (SHU), a disciplinary and solitary confinement facility, in which inmates face even further restrictions, commonly referred to as “the hole”. He was strip searched and his Quran and personal belongings were seized. The cell has no bed, no shower and no control on the lights.
Solitary confinement results in a severe deterioration of mental health and wellbeing of the prisoner. We request campaigners to write to the prison warden pressurizing for his immediate release on humanitarian grounds or his transfer to a medical facility so that he can be promptly treated.

Dear Warden Ron Wiley,
Re: Appeal for Imam Jamil’s (99974-555) Immediate Transfer to Medical Facility
I have received reports that Imam Jamil’s (Reg. No. 99974-555) health has severely deteriorated. He has been diagnosed with a life-threatening condition and needs to be moved to a medical facility immediately to receive proper treatment.
I urge you to transfer the imam to an appropriate medical facility for the immediate treatment of his medical condition.
I also urge you, considering the Imam’s age, to grant him release on humanitarian grounds so that he can spend the last few years of his life with his loved ones and be treated in a medical facility he desires.
I look forward to your favourable response.
Yours sincerely,
