[updated 15.50, 18 October 2019] Since calling tomorrow’s vigil, information of shots being fired after Jumuah at the main mosque in Abuja, and the tear gassing of worshippers has emerged. We are calling an additional vigil tonight at 8.30 – 9.30pm. Join this and or tomorrow’s vigil outside the Nigeria High Commission on 19 October 2019 from 10am to 12 noon.
Nigerian authorities have routinely targeted members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria as well as worshippers and civilians more generally at places of worship and during religious ceremonies and protests.
There was violence including fatalities perpetrated by the Nigerian forces on Ashura this year as well as on and during the Arbaeen trek of previous years. As we see weekly and often daily, violence is meted out against protestors from the movement demanding the release of Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky and all those detained illegally.
As this year’s Arbaeen trek comes to its culmination in Nigeria on Saturday 19th, IHRC is urging all those concerned to join the vigil outside the Nigeria High Commission in London, UK from 10am to 12 noon and demand an end to the attacks and killings, and to demand the release Sheikh El-Zakzaky and all those illegally detained.
When: 19th October 2019, 10am to 12noon
Where: Nigeria High Commission, 9, Northumberland Avenue, London, WC2N 5BX
