PRESS RELEASE: Serbia / Bosnian War – IHRC welcomes the long- awaited arrest of Radovan Karadzic
Radovan Karadzic, war criminal leader of the self proclaimed ‘Republika Srpska’ in Bosnia and Herzegovina has been arrested in Serbia after thirteen years on the run.
IHRC welcomes the long awaited arrest of Karadzic who is accused of organising the 1995 massacre of more than 8000 Muslims in Srebrenica and other atrocities in the Bosnian war. However IHRC is deeply concerned that it has taken so long to arrest one of the most wanted persons in Europe to face charges of genocide and crimes against humanity.
IHRC Chair Massoud Shadjareh commented:
“Although I welcome this late arrest one cannot help remember the days when activists like myself were demonstrating and urging the British Government and the International Community to acknowledge Karadzic’s war crimes, he was receiving red carpet treatment and being wined and dined by Western leaders. The world community needs to stop politicising and have a watchful eye over the level of demonisation which has always preceded ethnic cleansing and genocide in Europe”.
