Press Release: Darfur: The Origins & Diagnosis of the Crisis – Briefing On-Line Now

IHRC’s latest briefing is a review of the current humanitarian crisis affecting the indigenous people of Darfur. The briefing looks at the history of Darfur and compares the state of the people in the past and how it has changed in the current climate.

The briefing suggests that there are four interrelated factors that have contributed to the Crisis:

• Drought and desertification
• Political and developmental neglect by successive national governments
• Central government policy undermining traditional structures and leadership
• Influx of large quantities of weapons into Darfur from neighbouring countries

IHRC suggests that the government’s refusal to listen to what the indigenous communities want has intensified the situation in Darfur.
