Press Release: Further erosion of civil liberties without justification

The Islamic Human Rights Commission is deeply concerned by the Government’s proposal to extend detention without charge beyond the current 28 days limit. None of the UK’s European counterparts, or the US, has seen the need for a 28 day detention period. Neither has the need for such a lengthy detention period been clearly identified in the UK.

In response to this proposal, Chair of IHRC, Massoud Shadjareh stated:

“We must understand that no civilized society should allow itself to be singled out for letting its civil liberties erode by such harsh measures without clear and unambiguous evidence demonstrating its need.”

IHRC calls upon the British government to respect the civil liberties of its citizens.
