IHRC Statement on 5th Anniversary of Guantanamo Bay
On the 5th anniversary of the opening of Guantanamo Bay, the Islamic Human Rights Commission calls for the closure of the prison facility.
Since its opening five years ago, Guantanamo Bay has become a symbol of the injustice that has underlined the entire ‘war on terror’ in which policies of rendition, torture and detention without charge have been legitimized. The opening of the permanent facility Camp VI contradicts President Bush’s statement that he would like to see the camp closed.
IHRC urges all people of conscience to redouble their efforts in campaigning for the closure of Guantanamo and the release of the detainees. On this shameful anniversary, IHRC’s sympathies lie with the families of the detainees, whose pain continues.
