This kind of Islamaphobia is unacceptable from an educational institute that should be promoting values of diversity, inclusivity and acceptance. Chair of IHRC, Massoud Shadjareh said, “They are using the excuse of security to cover up for xenophobia, I find this totally deplorable,” he added that “women should be free to express their religiosity the way they want in this society and a few inches of cloth over the face should not frighten anyone.”

Since the college is unable to differentiate and recognize one face of a parent from another face there is no facial identification procedure – unless they are expected to carry identification. Even at ports and airports this excuse is not being used. 

The Islamic Human Rights Commission is deeply concerned about the increase in Islamaphobia in the UK and Europe. There have been a number of attacks on Muslim women and actions such as these only add further to the marginalisation and targeting of Muslims in Britain. 

We urge the Manchester College to issue an immediate apology and hold firm to the ideas of multi-culturalism, diversity and acceptance.
