The US decision to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel is an act of diplomatic piracy that heaps insult on the wound of occupation that continues to afflict millions of Palestinians.

The move to break with the international status quo and recognise Israeli sovereignty over the occupied city is intended to send the message to the Palestinians and their supporters that regardless of international law or the dictates of justice their resistance is futile in the face of global power realities.

In so brazenly defying international law it is the latest act of one rogue regime working to strengthen another rogue state, an illegal occupier that has shown nothing but scornful disdain for UN resolutions in place for the last 50 years.

Having supported and provided cover for Israeli crimes for decades the US has now trampled over the last remaining taboo in international law as if it were an outdated irrelevance.

IHRC chair Massoud Shadjareh said: “While unswerving US support for the Israeli state has long eroded any moral authority Washington might have enjoyed over the Middle East conflict this move represents a new low and a further demonstration that it cannot be relied upon to bring justice to the Palestinians. It is also a blatant provocation in an already tense region and a slap in the face of people all over the world, including Muslims, who support the Palestinian struggle and consider the city as sacred.”
