PRESS RELEASE – UK: IHRC issues safety advice in run-up to “Punish a Muslim Day”
In order to help protect the Muslim community from possible Islamophobic and racist attacks arising from the “Punish a Muslim Day” hate campaign IHRC has issued a 47-point advice to Muslim women.
The campaign which consists of letters sent out mainly on social media encouraging people to carry out acts of violence against Muslims on 3 April 2018 is designed to create fear in the Muslim community.
Whilst IHRC believes that we should not allow these letters to prevent people from going about their normal business, it is nevertheless sensible to urge caution in the coming days in case the letters incite individuals or groups to attack Muslims.
The advice is targeted at Muslim women in particular because they often present a more visible and vulnerable target to would-be attackers.
IHRC’s advice includes tips such as not opening suspect packages, travelling in groups, avoiding areas that are not well lit, choosing an aisle seat on public transport to facilitate a quicker exit if necessary and keeping car windows and doors locked especially at busy intersections.
