Zakat: A Pillar of Islam
Zakat is not just a duty on those with wealth given for the sake of Allah, but a right the poor have over the wealthy. Allah says in the Quran:
“Those in whose wealth there is a recognised right for the needy and the poor” (70:24-25).
The obligation for Muslims to give zakat is mentioned several times in the Qur’an, and is usually paired with the command to “establish prayer”. Zakat is like a wealth tax whose observance is one of the five “pillars” of Islam.
It is not a charitable donation but the duty of each Muslim who meets the necessary criteria of surplus wealth. Muslims believe that paying Zakat purifies, increases and blesses the remainder of their wealth. Thus Zakat helps the giver as much as the receiver.
The Qur’an (9:60) lists eight categories of potential recipients of Zakat.
Alms are for the poor and the needy, for those who work to administer them, for those whose hearts are to be won over, for those in bondage, for debtors, in the path of God, and for wayfarers.
At the Islamic Human Rights Commission, your Zakat is distributed with the utmost due diligence in accordance to the principles and categories laid out in the Quran, practice of the Prophet Muhammed (SM) and the teachings of our pious predecessors. Your Zakat funds is utilised for supporting some of the most vulnerable, neglected, and oppressed people to have access to the help they desperately need. The donations will be used to support those that are eligible to receive Zakat and for the following type of work (the list is not exhaustive):
Reduce absolute and relative poverty
- Help homeless people, refugees and migrants
- Support the orphan and the widowed
- Pay for medical expenses of the poor and the needy
- Support prisoners with their needs
- Feed the oppressed in war zones and conflicts
- Victims of state violence
- Victims of war and conflict
- Those affected by natural disasters
- Hate crime/Islamophobia project
- Essential items for prisoners
- Medical aid
- Orphans and widows
