Dr Dauda Nalado of the Academic Forum of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria announced in a press conference that the organisation will persuefivemore suits at the Kaduna Judicial Division of Federal High Court in regards to the murders of their members during the 2022 Kaduna State Ashura Procession. These will bring the total amount of cases to seven, which are being directed mostly towards Usman Alkali Baba, the Inspecter General of Police. Dr Nalado said regarding the cases:
“The public could recall that on 8th August, 2022, a joint team of policemen led by the Area Commandant of Zaria Command of the Nigerian Police Force together with the DPO of both Kasuwan Mata Sabon Gari and Zaria City Divisions opened fire on Muslims who were conducting peaceful procession to commemorate the Ashura in Zaria.
“The unlawful attack led to the killing of seven people namely Muhsin Badamasi, Muhammad Yusuf, Kazim Umar, Auwal Mustapha, Umar Inuwa, Aliyu Lawal and Jafar Maagaji,…………….
“Another four suits have been equally filed against the same IGP and 3 others in connection with attacking and killing of four Shites namely, Zaharaddeen Lawal, Aminu Abdulkadir, Mubarak Iliyasu and Musa Adamu.
“The victims were killed by policemen while observing their religious acts of worship which inter alia include Ashura procession in Soba town of Kaduna State on 28th August, 2022.
“The former DPO of Soba is among the four respondents in the suits,”
The cases are asking that the families of the victims each receive N200,000,000, culminating in a total of N1.4billion.
This case is the latest of many attacks on peaceful religious processions by Shi’ite Muslims in Nigeria by the police. Previous cases include the Zaria Massacre in 2015 where at least 348 worshippers were known to be killed, whilst the figure expected to be much more, with their bodies being dumped in mass graves.
