Background
The Shuafat Refugee Camp is the only Palestinian refugee camp within Quds and houses refugees who fled the Nakba and their descendants. These people have been put under a brutal siege after a soldier was killed in response to four Palestinian teenagers being murdered by Israel. The Shuafat Refugee camp, and other Palestinian neighbourhoods, with a combined population of 130,000, are surrounded by the apartheid wall, leaving only two ways in and out. This has made it easy to blockade by the apartheid forces who claim to be searching for the person who killed the soldier, and who say that they believe he is in the camp. Whilst the blockade is still in effect, they have continuously raided the camp arresting 11 people. The blockade has been condemned as “unacceptable” by the United Nations body working in the area
In response, Palestinians in the camp, Quds and the surrounding area have gone on a general strike, refusing to work until the siege is lifted. This includes workers refusing to go to work, schools, and shops staying closed and mass protests. A new resistance group in Shuafat, calling themselves the “Lion’s Den”, have called for a day of action against the blockade, whilst the nearby Palestinian town of Nablus has also taken part in the strike.
