How did the final generation of Ottoman Muslim scholarship see the revolution in public morals taking place in their society? In this book, as deeply resonant with Muslims of today as it was for those of his own time, the Ottoman Şeyhülislam Muṣṭafā Ṣabrī Efendī offers a cutting and farsighted critique of the spread of Western gender norms in Muslim societies. From the pinnacle of Islamic scholarship, this first complete English translation from Shaykh Ṣabrī’s corpus deconstructs the errors of modernist opposition to the hallmarks of traditional Muslim society, such as polygamy, gender segregation, and modest dress.
About the author:
Mustafa Sabri Efendi was a prominent Islamic scholar and spiritual leader who lived in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Renowned for his deep knowledge of Islamic jurisprudence and theology, Mustafa Sabri Efendi served as the Grand Mufti of the Ottoman Empire during a significant period of transition, from 1913 to 1919. He was widely respected for his scholarly contributions and his efforts to uphold the principles of justice and compassion within Islamic jurisprudence. His teachings continue to inspire and influence generations of Muslims around the world.
About the translator:
Muzzammil Ahmad Al-Nadwi currently serves as an Imam at the East London Mosque in London, UK, and as an Advisor with the Islamic Council at MRDF. A native of Bihar, India, he grew up in the United States where he started his Arabic and Islamic studies. He then graduated from Nadwatul Ulama, Lucknow in 2017 and Al-Azhar University, Cairo in 2021. He completed his MA in Islamic Law at SOAS, University of London in 2022, writing his dissertation on Islamic criminal jurisprudence. He is pursuing a PhD in Hanbalī studies at KU Leuven, Belgium, and completing his MA dissertation in legal theory (usul al-fiqh) at Al-Azhar. He has memorized the Qur’an and is traditionally licensed in the major works of various Islamic sciences. He also teaches at several institutions locally and online, while engaging in other research and translation projects.

Uncivil Rites: Palestine and the Limits of Academic Freedom – Steven Salaita
In 2014, renowned professor Steven Salaita had his appointment to a tenured professorship revoked by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in response to his tweets criticizing the Israeli government’s assault on Gaza. Salaita’s firing generated a huge public outcry, with thousands petitioning for his reinstatement and more than five thousand scholars pledging to boycott UIUC.
His case raises important questions about academic freedom, free speech on campus and the movement for justice in Palestine. In Uncivil Rites, Salaita reflects upon the controversy.
Gaza: A History – Jean-Pierre Filiu
Gaza has become synonymous with conflict and dispute. Jean-Pierre Filiu’s fantastic new book recounts how this has been the case not only with regards to the Israel-Palestine conflict, but also many years before contemporary Modern East politics. Beginning with the Hyksos in 18th century BC, Filiu takes readers through modern times and the ongoing disputes of the region, ending with what may be in store for the future.
The author documents how Gaza has been contested by the Pharaohs, Persians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Fatimids, Mamluks, Crusaders, and Ottomans. Up until 1948, when 200,000 people sought refuge in Gaza – a marginal area neither Israel nor Egypt wanted, yet the ignored Palestinian statehood claimed.
Jean-Pierre Filiu’s Gaza is the first complete and quite possibly a definitive history of the territory in any language. And shows though small in size, the regions history has been monumental.

On The Border – Michel Warschawski
On the Border chronicles a radical political education in a time and place charged with idealism and danger. A Polish Frenchman and a rabbi’s son, Michel Warschawski left for Israel at the age of sixteen to to study the Talmud, and eventually became one of the most renowned figures of the Israeli left. Warschawski’s involvement in radical politics led to inspiring alliances with Jews, Muslims, Christians, and Marxists. Yet as the border lines hardened, he became targeted by the Shin Bet, Israel’s notorious intelligence agents.
Finally arrested, incarcerated and interrogated for 20 days, Michel gives his readers an insider’s view of the psychological and political pressures that Shin Bet brought to bear, even on Jews, and never lets you forget the severity of treatment that his Palestinian colleagues faced.
In touch with the Jewish diaspora, and inspired by a socialism without borders, the book mixes sharp analysis of the ongoing conflict with deep personal insight into the events of the last three decades. The lessons he draws from his experience on the border between Israel and Palestine should be instructive for all the places where cultures rub against each other for better and worse. Warschawski’s perspective offers hope for the rich cultural and political exchange that these places offer their inhabitants, and hope for his adopted land.
