IHRC is deeply concerned by increasing rhetoric from western leaders discussing military intervention in Libya.
Protestors and groups involved in the opposition to Colonel Gadafi’s regime have categorically stated they do not want external military support to bring about change in Libya.
IHRC Chair, Massoud Shadjareh stated:
“The turmoil in Libya should not be used as an excuse for Western interference in that country’s affairs. Such discussions are a cynical attempt to gain control of Libya’s resources and crush a nascent independent state that could represent its peoples.
“Clearly the more the people of the region are politically represented, the less likely they will be to support the economic, political and social policies that have favoured the ‘West’ and resulted in the denial of the peoples’ basic rights.
