Join IHRC for its Author Evening with Salman Sayyid about his books ‘A Fundamental Fear’ & ‘Thinking Through Islamophobia: Global Perspectives’ (editor AbdoolKarim Vakil) on Thursday 22 September. Both books provide a unique perspective on Islamism in the West, ‘A Fundamental Fear’ looks at how Islamic movements are a continuation of political and cultural decolonization. Sayyid takes this concept further in his most recent book ‘Thinking Through Islamaphobia’ and looks through the use of the controversial term Islamophobia by taking it out of the focus on the West and giving it an independent identity in its struggle for justice.
Reviews:
International on A Fundamental Fear’
“A welcoming change… should be of great interest to those who wish to look at the phenomenon of political Islam and the divination of the clash between the West and the rest from a more sophisticated and theoretical angle… a worthy contribution.” –Impact
The discussion and book signing with Salman Sayyid will be broadcast live on IHRC.TV from 18.30 – 20.30 BST (GMT +1) on Wednesday 22 September and the books will be available for a 15% discount on the night.
Barnor Hesse, Northwestern University on Thinking Through Islamophobia: Global Perspectives:
‘Thinking Through Islamophobia is a rare endeavour of collective scholarship that is timely, prescient and seminal. Challenging us to develop Critical Muslim Studies in post-western epistemologies, it provides exemplary analyses of the imbricated formations of racism, Orientalism, secularism and post-colonialism largely silenced by contemporary social and political theory.’

“And what reason have you that you should not fight in the way of Allah and of the weak among the men and the women and the children, (of) those who say: Our Lord! Cause us to go forth from this town, whose people are oppressors, and give us from Thee a guardian and give us from Thee a helper.”
