PRESS RELEASE: Egypt/ Tony Blair/ Pro-Mubarak violence – UK, USA, EU must push for end
In response to the escalating death and injury toll resulting from pro-government violence against protestors in Egypt, IHRC Chair Massoud Shadjareh said:
“The nature of US, UK, EU support for dictatorial regimes is exposed by their failure to wholeheartedly support the demands of Egypt’s people for the removal of Mubarak. Not even regime orchestrated violence has brought a fully condemnatory reaction.
“Tony Blair’s unequivocal support for Mubarak today is shocking. It appears that the torturer and murderer of thousands is ‘immensely courageous and a force for good’. The Quartet should be removing Blair from his post for these comments and making clear that they do not find the murders and tortures committed under Mubarak’s regime as either courageous or good. By not even castigating Blair, the Quartet simply deepens their reputation for hypocrisy and callousness when the issue is the human rights of Muslim and developing world ‘others’.”
