1. Release of 13 political prisoners
News has emerged that 13 of the 78 members of the Popular Congress Party being detained by the Sudanese government have been released. They are as follows: Omar Abdul Maarof, Osama Ilyas, Hassan Khalifa, Hassan Satti, Siddig Abdul Wahid, AlTayeb Abdul Gadir, Zuhair Hamid Sulieman, Yasir Saad Waness, Dr Seiffuddin Mohammed Ahmed, Hamid Hamza, Ibrahim Abdul Rahman Ahmed, Al Toum Hassaballah, Tariq Mahjoub.
2. Hunger strike stopped
Dr Al Turabi and the remaining detainees have all ended their hunger strike as of 15 July 2004.
3.Suggested action
Thank you all for your efforts – clearly, they have not been wasted. We urge you to keep up the pressure on the Sudanese government since there remains a lot more which must be done. Most notably, the leader of the opposition party, Dr Hasan Al-Turabi, is still being detained, as are 64 other members of the PCP, in rat-infested cells. Dr Turabi is 73, his health is in critical condition and authorities have refused to move him into hospital care. Other detainees include professionals and students, many of whom have been tortured or are suffering from infection or disease. They have been in jail since April 2004 for their political dissent.
Dr. Turabi and the members of his party have been imprisoned for inter alia, speaking out against the atrocities being committed by the Sudanese government against the indigenous people in the Darfur region of Sudan.
Please write to the following addresses expressing your concern for the treatment of the people of Darfur as well as of all Sudanese prisoners of faith and conscience.
