PRESS RELEASE: Briefing now available on-line: War Crimes and Accountability: A Historical Analysis
IHRC’s latest briefing is an historical analysis of accountability for war crimes in light of the recent revelations of widespread and systematic torture being committed by US troops in Iraq, Afghanistan and Guantanamo Bay is now available on-line.
The briefing outlines the major questions of law and ethics that recent events have raised and looks at how these issues were negotiated during the Algerian struggle for independence, the US war against Vietnam, British involvement in Northern Ireland, and Israeli actions in Lebanon.
It also reiterates the importance of accountability, and briefly examines the experiences and potential of ICTY and the ICC. Its conclusions however on the likelihood of proper accountability in the cases of US troops in Iraq, Afghanistan and Guantanamo Bay are bleak.
