Gaza’s Civil Defence agency said it feared there were more than 10,000 bodies still buried under the vast sea of rubble. The UN has previously estimated that 60% of structures across Gaza have been damaged or destroyed. According to the UN World Food Programme (WFP), the war has left more than two million Gazans homeless, without income, and utterly dependent on food aid to survive.
About 1.9 million people have been displaced since the war began, amounting to 90% of the population, with many of them forced to move repeatedly. Hundreds of thousands are living in tent cities and severely overcrowded shelters with poor sanitation and access to little clean water.
The latest UN figures show that nine in 10 homes in the territory have been destroyed or damaged. Schools, hospitals, churches, mosques, cemeteries, shops and offices have been repeatedly hit.
Israeli forces have repeatedly bombed, besieged, and attacked hospitals in Gaza. The World Health Organization said there had been 654 attacks on health facilities recorded since the start of the war.
Palestinian health authorities estimate that more than 46,900 people were killed in Gaza during the more than 15 months of war and more than 110,700 were wounded. A UK-led study published by the medical journal The Lancet this month suggested that the health ministry figures may underestimate the death toll by more than 40%.
Our partners in Gaza were among the first to respond to the conflict when it started in October 2024. With your funding and support we provided humanitarian and medical services. In Gaza with our partners we have supported Palestinians with:
- Essential drugs and disposables, hygiene kits, food packages, and shelter supplies
- Deployed emergency medical teams, comprised of medical and humanitarian specialists, to treat injuries and infections among Palestinians, and to support Palestinian healthcare workers and the capacity of the local health system
- Established medical points to provide primary healthcare services, monitor and respond to the outbreak of communicable diseases, screen for malnutrition, and provide sexual and reproductive health services
- Supported the rehabilitation of Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis and the refurbishment of Shifa Hospital, following Israeli military sieges and attacks
- Launched a nutrition programme to protect women, children, and others at risk of malnutrition, through frontline health services, nutrition screening, and prevention over the next two years
- Established a paediatric intensive care unit
- Supported WHO and other agencies in the monitoring and quality of the poliovirus vaccination campaign

Our partners are on the ground in the Gaza Strip responding right now ensuring Gazans have access to essential needs such as food and have the medical supplies they need to cope with the unprecedented influx of casualties.
Our partners will continue to respond, ensuring the well-being of Palestinians who are desperate for aid. As of the 5th of February 2024, the UN says that since the start of the war, about 100,000 people in Gaza have been killed, injured or are missing.
- 360,000+ residential units destroyed or damaged
- 13 of 35 hospitals partially functioning
- 386 educational facilities damaged
- 122 ambulances damaged
- 221 places of worship (Mosques and Churches) damaged
- 11 bakeries destroyed
A population of 2.3 million, of which 47% are children. Currently, over 85% of the total population is internally displaced, and 1.7 million live in refugee camps.
Residents in Gaza have flocked to hospitals and United Nations schools for safety, hoping that Israel will abide by international law and not attack those coordinates.
However, places of shelter and medical care have also not been free from Israeli attacks.
- Over half of Gaza’s homes – 278,000 residential units have been destroyed or damaged
- 311 educational facilities damaged
- 87 ambulances damaged
- 11 bakeries destroyed
Through our projects in Palestine (West Bank and Gaza), we work with trusted and experienced local partners to deliver programmes that provide Palestinians access to essential health services and food aid. We work throughout the year and respond as quickly as possible in times of humanitarian emergency.
The UN Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in the OPT determined that the “political system of entrenched rule” in the West Bank and Gaza Strip “satisfies the prevailing evidentiary standard for the existence of apartheid”.
Since 2022 the West Bank saw an alarming increase in violence, demolitions, evictions, and movement restrictions. This has led to massive healthcare needs due to injuries and many have been killed: men, women and children. 2023 is the deadliest year for Palestinians in the West Bank since the United Nations.
In the West Bank homes and other vital infrastructure are routinely demolished, and inhabitants are evicted by force. This is due to the violence, intimidation, and rejection of building permits. Schools continue to be damaged or demolished. Palestinian students are routinely harassed on their way to school, hampering their access to education.
