Talha Ahsan a human rights activist has had his civil liberties abused by being unlawfully detained in UK prison for five years. Talha was arrested at his home on 19 July 2006 in response to an extradition request from the USA under the controversial Extradition Act of 2003, which does not require the presentation of any prima facie evidence.
Talha Ahsan a keen poet has ccompiled a collection of his work that he has written in prison entitled ‘This be the Answer’. IHRC will be marking Talha Ahsan’s five years without trial with a poetry reading from his book, guests will include human rights lawyer Gareth Peirce, Bruce Kent Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament activist and Talha’s parents.

“While being held illegally in Guantanamo Bay and demonised by the US administration, Talha had the courage to stand up for my rights and to believe that I should be tried fairly and be given access to justice. Now that our roles are reversed, I stand up for him today and say the same. If Talha has committed a crime, then try him here in the UK, give him access to justice, rather than an American system which will afford him none. From my experiences he cannot expect to find any justice in the US.”
