Here are a few quick updates on the Genocide Memorial Day Project.
Remembering the Bosnian Genocide
On the 24th anniversary of Srebrenica genocide on July 11, thousands of people from all over the world will set off for a Peace March in Bosnia to commemorate the victims of the genocide. It is expected that the march concludes at the cemetery in the village of Potocari where, according to Balkan Transitional Justice, “33 more victims of the 1995 mass killings of Bosniaks by Bosnian Serb forces will be buried at the annual commemoration at the Srebrenica memorial centre”. Thousands of families are still searching for their loved one and still more than 8,000 people remain missing around the country.
In commemoration of the anniversary of the genocide that took place in Bosnia, we have compiled a selection of resources to highlight the worst atrocity committed in Europe since the Second World War and educate younger generations on the importance of remembering victims of genocide to not repeat the past.

Poetry Competition for 2020
The Genocide Memorial Day (GMD) poetry competition was established in 2012 to raise awareness around issues like racism, otherisation, discrimination and dehumanisation. Our aim is to inspire students to express themselves through writing poetry and help teachers in subjects across the curriculum encourage students to learn about and discuss genocide and more particularly how genocides come about and how they may be prevented.
The GMD competition challenges your students to write a poem and reflect the theme of ‘protecting humanity from genocide’. Full details of the competition can be found here.
The deadline for submissions this year is 1st December 2019. Winners will be announced around or at the Genocide Memorial Day event on Sunday 19th January 2020.
The competition generally cuts across various curriculum strands including history, English literature, politics, religious education, citizenship and media studies.
