IHRC is supporting a rally outside the headquarters of the British Medical Association today after the organisation pulled a talk that was due to be given by the founder of a leading pro-Palestinian charity.

Dr Swee Chai Ang, who established Medical Aid for Palestinians, had been invited to speak by the trade union’s student chapter at its annual Medical Students Conference.

However, the BMA then swiftly withdrew the invitation, saying only that the meeting’s agenda had already been finalised and that Dr. Ang would not be able to speak.

Dr. Swee Chai Ang is an orthopaedic surgeon, who survived the Sabra-Shatila massacre in 1982 during the Israeli invasion of Lebanon. She then founded Medical Aid for Palestinians, where she has volunteered ever since, alongside her 48-year career as a regular NHS doctor.

Instead, she intends to give her talk to those gathered in front of BMA House, Tavistock Square, WC1H 9JP, ahead of the slot that she was meant to be speaking at on Friday 4 April. Her speech will start at 12pm.

Dr Ang said: “I was invited to speak to medical students, after all, they are the doctors of the future. And yet, the institution that claims to represent them is shutting down free speech and ignoring their wishes on who they wish to hear from.

She will also be speaking a day later at Bart’s Royal London Hospital, where she was the first female orthopaedic consultant appointed in its 900-year history. The event will take place at the Milton Lecture Theatre, 4 Newark Street, London, E1 2AT, on the 5th April, at the National Orthopaedic Conference 2025. Dr Ang speaks at 11 am.
