Press Release: France: Concerns Regarding the Violation of CEDAW– Report On-Line Now

IHRC’s latest report objects to the French government’s claim in its sixth report that the 15 March 2004 Act was implemented in pursuance to its commitment to promoting the equality of women and eliminating discrimination against them.

The report analyses different social areas that the government say would improve with the banning of the Islamic hijab and other religious symbols. IHRC makes recommendations on each of the following areas:

• Measures to Eliminate Discrimination
• Guarantee of Basic Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms
• Sex Role Stereotyping and Prejudice
• Representation
• Nationality
• Education
• Employment, Health, Law and Marriage

IHRC’s overall recommendation is to repeal the 15 March 2004 Act and other such laws and policies.
