Press Release: Reid’s Denial to Recognise Roots of the Problem Endanger us Further
The Islamic Human Rights Commission condemns Home Secretary John Reid’s call for Muslim parents to root out extremists in the community.
Reid’s latest attack on Muslim youth belies the statistics which show that those arrested are in their mid-20s or even older. Blaming the parents for not doing enough to control their adult offspring is both unrealistic and not demanded from any other community, and seems to be only a ploy to divert attention from the root causes of terrorism.
Reid’s comments once again reflect the Blair government’s absolute refusal to recognise that its policies have had a substantial role to play in the quagmire we now find ourselves, and only serve to endanger us further.
IHRC Chair Massoud Shadjareh stated:
“If the government is sincere in finding a solution, it needs to come out of this state of denial, stop pointing fingers at others and instead recognise the root causes and its own responsibility within that.”
