PRESS RELEASE: UK – Babar Ahmad suing the Metropolitan Police for assault
The Islamic Human Rights Commission (IHRC) supports Babar Ahmad’s decision to sue the Metropolitan Police for the brutal assault he sustained during his arrest in December 2003.
IHRC has been following the case for the last five years and has had several meetings with the police and the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) during which it sought to raise the concerns of the community regarding the police brutality.
IHRC Chairman Massoud Shadjareh stated:
“The behaviour of the police and the inability and unwillingness of the IPCC to bring to account those responsible for Mr. Ahmad’s injuries reflects the systematic failure of those institutions established to protect the public”.
“Mr Ahmad’s case is not an isolated one. IHRC receives complaints of police brutality and Islamophobia on a regular basis but very few individuals have had the confidence to pursue their complaints to this level.”
