Bulgaria’s application for EU membership has to be conditional, dependent on the Bulgarian government’s willingness to achieve certain goals pertaining to religious freedom, equal rights and respect before the law for all its citizens, including its substantial Muslim population, which has faced decades of demonisation, discrimination and violence.
