Press Release: China / UK – New briefing on-line, ‘Islamophobia and Anti-Muslim Racism as Art and Documentary: Notes on Shanghai Vice (UK, Channel 4, 1999).’

IHRC’s latest briefing takes another look at the injustice and suppression of China’s Muslim minority, but also media representation of the issue.

The report analyses the Channel 4 documentary series entitled ‘Shanghai Vice’ from 1999 and discusses underlying Islamophobic representation.

IHRC Head of Research, Arzu Merali, stated:

‘Whilst highlighting the struggle of Han Chinese and the many injustices they suffer, the programme failed to reflect the problems of the Uighur and Muslims communities, allowing instead, derogatory and insolent comments to go unchallenged. The result was to portray a Chinese party line as fact i.e. that Muslims were the cause of disorder within the Chinese borders.“
