PRESS RELEASE: Global – Celebrate Human Rights Day 2010 with Action, not Rhetoric.
On Human Rights Day 2010, the Islamic Human Rights Commission (IHRC) welcomes the UN’s decision to promote and highlight the achievements of human rights defenders who often risk life and limb for the betterment of mankind.
While the IHRC recognises the importance of celebrating such defenders of humanity, it reminds the UN that triumphant rhetoric alone without meaningful assistance is of little use to those imprisoned and abused for their defence of others.
IHRC Chairman Massoud Shadjareh stated:
“The global celebrations today will be of little comfort to those human rights defenders whose cries for help in the dungeons of repressive regimes continue to go unanswered by the UN.”
“From Occupied Palestine to Kashmir, from Egypt to Bahrain, entire populations have been persecuted, brutalised, and discriminated against for decades while the UN has failed to take any meaningful action.”
