Press Release: IHRC Disappointed at Spanish Decision to Uphold Taysir Alouni Conviction
The Islamic Human Rights Commission is very disappointed at the Spanish Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the seven-year jail sentence of al-Jazeera correspondent Taysir Alouni.
IHRC views the decision as indicative of the wave of institutional Islamophobia currently sweeping through Europe. That a Muslim journalist should be convicted of terrorism for carrying out the basic elements of his profession is deplorable.
Chairman of the IHRC, Massoud Shadjareh, stated:
“Like every other journalist in the world, Taysir Alouni’s profession inevitably brought him into contact with certain individuals. If he is to be convicted for such contact, then every investigative reporter in the world needs to watch their step from now on.”
