Press Release: London Bombings Reports find no Justification for Terror Laws
The Islamic Human Rights Commission believes that the findings of the two reports issued today vindicate its view that a lack of police powers was not the reason behind the bombings.
Neither the Report of the Official Account of the Bombings of 7 July 2005 nor the Intelligence and Security Committee Report into the London Terrorist Attacks on 7 July 2005, found that it was due to a lack of anti-terror laws or police powers that the bombings occurred. Yet, the bombings have been repeatedly used by the government as a justification to introduce increasingly draconian laws impinging freedom of speech and association.
IHRC is also repeating its calls for a public inquiry to be held into the bombings as this is the only way to truly learn from the tragedy.
Chairman of the IHRC, Massoud Shadjareh, added:
“It is incredible that the government is still refusing to hold a public inquiry into an event so important that the Prime Minister felt he needed to change the rules of the game.”
