Press Release: Sharon’s ‘Final Solution’
IHRC is extremely concerned by Israel’s attempt to prevent the international media from reporting the escalation of violence carried out by the Israeli authorities in the Palestinian territories. On Sunday, the Israeli authorities declared Ramallah a ‘Closed Military Area’ and ordered foreign journalists to leave. In fact, Israeli military restriction has no power in Ramallah which legally remains part of the Palestinian Authorities territory.
Israel’s flagrant human rights violations and total disregard for the international rule of law over the past 54 years are well documented. The international community, for 54 years, has silently watched the indiscriminate killing of innocent Palestinian men, women and children. It has only spoken out to condemn lone Palestinian suicide bombers but remained silent on the actions of Israeli troops engaging in genocide.
Although the international community is obliged under international law to act, recent times have shown that human rights are selectively applicable and that international law can be violated when powerful states wish to do so.
The international community knows of Sharon’s history of butchery in the refugee camps of Sabra and Shatila, yet they have done nothing to indict him nor to prevent him for carrying out similar atrocities in Palestine. Conversely, even in light of recent escalations of violence, they continue to aid Israel militarily, economically and financially. The international community is implicated in the genocides.
The treatment of the Palestinian people is one of the greatest tragedies of modern times. The victims of the Holocaust continue to ask for compensation and redress of the crimes committed against them 57 years on. Yet acts of annihilation of an entire people continue unchallenged against the Palestinians. As Sharon sets the stage for the ‘Final Solution’ of the Palestinian ‘problem’, it is time for the international community to break the silence and to adhere to their legal, and more importantly, their moral obligations.
IHRC has produced two campaign packs to empower civil society to act and seek justice for the Palestinian people. The first pack is to protest against the fraudulent labelling of Israeli settlement goods. This type of deception continues to normalise the occupation of Palestinian land as the legitimate annexation of land to the territory of ‘Israel.’ The second pack contains graphic details of human rights atrocities currently being committed by the Israeli forces against the Palestinian people, and asks those concerned to bring these atrocities to light.
