Bekir Yildiz was the Islamist mayor of Sican. He was imprisoned in September 1997 for organising a Jerusalem Night demonstration. Nureddin Sirin, editor of Selam newspaper, is still incarcerated, serving a 17 and half year sentence for being an Islamist.
