The images released by Human Rights Watch indicate a widespread fire-related destruction of Muslim villages already under military lockdown. According to an H-R-W analysis, more than 400 buildings were torched in just three villages. The group’s Asia director has called on Myanmar to immediately open a UN-assisted probe to ensure justice and security for the victims. The military had declared the area an operation zone since surprise raids on border posts left several police dead last month. On Saturday, at least eight people were killed and dozens were arrested in an army crackdown there. Rakhine has often seen tensions between extremist Buddhists and Muslims. Hundreds of Muslims have been killed and thousands more displaced at the hands of Myanmar’s security forces and Buddhist extremists since 2012.
