The Counter-Islamophobia Kit (CIK) project team is pleased to host the Counter Islamophobia Toolkit launch. At this event, experts from eight European Union member states (France, Germany, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Portugal, Greece and the UK) will present the results of our major counter-Islamophobia project Countering Islamophobia through the Use of Best Practice in Counter-Narratives in EU Member States.

This novel and pioneering two-year project is funded by the European Commission – Directorate of Justice and brings together academic and non-academic experts from across Europe. For further information see www.cik.leeds.ac.uk

This comprehensive research, is the largest of its kind in Europe, based on normative patterns of Islamophobia and effective counter-narratives to Islamophobia in each case. The project findings have inter alia documented shortcomings in the implementation and enforcement of anti-discrimination law and policies, looked at wider cultural narratives, the problems of media representation, as well as other laws, policies and institutional issues, and their intersections with Islamophobia and its diverse manifestations.  Crucially the project has spoken to practitioners in all fields in the eight countries to look at best practice, as well as recommendations for tackling all of the above within the member states and European levels.  This innovative research forms the basis of the ‘Counter-Islamophobia Kit’, containing key actionable messages to be conveyed to policy makers, national governments, professionals, civil society, the media and practitioners from across the EU

The launch event will include a panel discussion which will provide room for debate based on the Counter-Islamophobia Toolkit. The toolkit contains invaluable key messages for policy and decision makers in EU institutions and national governments to develop more effective and targeted policy and legal action. The project findings will be also essential for the civil society organisations and human rights professionals to advocate for the respect and the protection of fundamental rights.

The event is organised by CIK Project Team (and in particular the IHRC and the University of Leeds) in cooperation with the Anti-Racism and Diversity Intergroup (ARDI), the Green/EFA Group and the European Commission, and will be part of a day intensive program on the occasion of the European Day against Islamophobia.

Please regularly check the project website. The project is funded by the European Commission – Directorate of Justice.
