This seminal report based on fieldwork by Faisal Bodi in Oldham looked at the causes of the summer’s riots, including a rise in anti-Muslim hatred at street and state level.
The riots were a manifestation of social problems related to racism and deprivation within communities of all ethnic backgrounds. The Islamic Human Rights Commission prepared a preliminary report to identify the perceived grievances of the Muslim youth involved in the disturbances and events surrounding them. The report emphasizes the importance of hearing from all parties involved to achieve effective reconciliation. Similar cases of communal tension and antagonism exist throughout the UK, indicating the need for a balanced understanding of the causes of the riots.
