1. Summary

2. Communications Officer and PA
Full time, £16,000 per annum, one year contract with prospect of renewal.
This post will support the information and communication needs of the Islamic Human Rights Commission (IHRC). We are an independent, not-for-profit, campaign, research and advocacy organization based in London, UK . We foster links and work in partnership with different organizations from Muslim and non-Muslim backgrounds, to campaign for justice for all peoples regardless of their racial, confessional or political background. IHRC is an NGO in Special Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations. For more information see https://www.ihrc.org.uk.
Main Tasks
· To support provision and channels of communication relevant to IHRC’s work
· To manage emails
· To be the main point of contact for any media enquiries
· To write Press Releases
· To promote the services of IHRC and ensure effective communication with various groups and key partners.
· To manage the annual newsletter
· To work closely with a range of individuals and organisations
· To support the organisation at networking and consultation events
· Undertake such other duties as are reasonably requested by the line manager and other staff at IHRC.
· To write reports and government consultations
· To manage the Chair’s diary and appointments

3. Campaign worker / general administrative worker
Part-time 3 days a week. One year contract, with possibility of renewal
Beginning June 2009 (must be available for induction last week of May)
Pro rata £13,000 per annum
IHRC’s campaign section is looking for an enthusiastic and talented individual to join its campaign team. Experience in the field of human rights work or activism is highly desirable, but not commitment to the cause and dedication are also sought after qualities. Good writing skills are essential and good interpersonal and communication skills are required. Knowledge of Microsoft Office essential.
With ever increasing demands for support on national and international campaigns covering issues as far a field as Guantanamo Bay, terrorism laws across the world from Bahrain, Turkey, China, the UK, USA, UAE to Australia, hijab bans, sectarian violence, prisoners of faith and miscarriages of justice.
IHRC is looking for a committed and enthusiastic worker, who is able to work in a pressurised environment, meet tight deadlines and provide administrative and logistical support to other team members at the IHRC office in London, UK .
This is a one year contract and the successful applicant will have a chance to develop their skills and will gain more responsibility as the contract proceeds.
This position ideally suits a recent graduate / postgraduate or someone seeking to re-enter the work realm. All candidates must demonstrate a dedication to human rights concerns and causes and the ethos of the organisation.
Job specifications
To provide general administrative support to the campaigns team, including taking notes of meetings, answering, returning and making phone calls, emails and letters under the co-ordinator’s supervision.
To provide logistical support on designated campaigns, including the writing of alerts, press releases and short reports and articles.
Liaising between the co-ordinator and the general public, press and other organisations.
Promoting the campaigns work of IHRC at various events.
The successful applicant may need to work some unsocial hours.

It is the applicants responsibility to ensure that all references are returned to IHRC by the deadline of 17 May 2009. All applicants need to be available for interview in the week beginning 14 May 2009. Applicants shortlisted for interview will be notified by end of 15 May 2009.
Both positions will be offered subject to an eight week trial period.
