President,
IHRC notes the omission by Israel in its state report of any reference to UN resolution 242 calling for the withdrawal of Israeli armed forces from territories seized in the 1967 war.
The refusal to comply with 242 continues to make a mockery of international law and subject the indigenous population of the West Bank, Gaza Strip and Golan Heights to unimaginable atrocities at the hands of the Israeli military and the settlers they protect.
The illegal transfer of armed Jewish settlers into occupied territories from which locals are often displaced continues apace in what is a de facto annexation of stolen land. It is one of the world’s last ongoing colonisations carried out by a state enjoying international immunity from any consequences merited by its illegal activities.
The ethno-religious supremacism that underpins the brutal occupation is a relic of a bygone age which can and should not be tolerated.
Just as the international community came together to force white South Africa to dismantle the system of apartheid, Israel must be forced by dint of international sanctions to roll back the occupation in all its forms.
Failure to do so is an acceptance of the principle of might is right and a green light for other rogue actors to flout international law.
