1. Summary
According to Narendra Modi’s official website (http://narendramodi.in/news/news_detail/411), the Governor of Solvici Province, Indonesia, Mr Syawral Yasin Limpo invited the Chief Minister to Indonesia in order to work together in the field of Agriculture and Biomass Energy. Modi has accepted the invitation and has expressed his earnestness in working together with the Indonesians.
2. Background
In February 2002, Gujarat witnessed horrific incidents of extreme violence that can only be described as genocide of the Muslim population. Over 2000 people, including British Asians, were slaughtered mercilessly, with over 200,000 people displaced in under-resourced refugee camps. Houses were systematically looted, businesses burnt down, hundreds of women gang raped and countless children murdered in the most horrific manner. All the evidence suggests that the Gujarat State Government, led by the current Chief Minister Narendra Modi, aided by the state police orchestrated the violence and carnage.
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) set up by the Supreme Court of India is investigating Modi and 61 others including members of the government cabinet, policemen and civil servants, for their role in the Gujarat massacre.
The UK, US and many European countries have already denied entry visas to Modi due to his prominent role in the massacre. Also in an embarrassing episode for Modi, Oman denied inviting him to the Gulf state, after Modi’s official office claimed he had been invited to Oman.
Yet, despite domestic and international public pressure, not a single prominent individual has been held to account or brought to justice for the horrific violence in Gujarat.

Dear Yuri Octavian Thamrin,
Re: Narendra Modi’s invitation to Indonesia for Agriculture and Biomass Energy networking
I am deeply concerned over the invitation extended to Narendra Modi by the Governor of Solvici Province, Indonesia, Mr Syawral Yasin Limpo for networking in the field of Agriculture and Biomass Energy.
Chief Minister Modi is currently under investigation by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) set up by the Supreme Court of India for his prominent role in the Gujarat massacre in February 2002.
Over 2000 people were slaughtered with more than 200,000 people displaced in under-resourced refugee camps. Houses were systematically looted, businesses burnt down, hundreds of women gang raped and many children murdered. All the evidence suggests that the Gujarat State Government, led by the current Chief Minister Narendra Modi, aided by state police orchestrated the violence and carnage. Modi justified the massacre afterwards by stating “The five crore (50 million) people of Gujarat have shown remarkable restraint under grave provocation”, referring to the Muslim population as the ones who provoked the violence.
Numerous international human rights NGO’s have condemned Modi and his colleagues for orchestrating and implementing the Gujarat massacre. The Islamic Human Rights Commission has produced a detailed report on the massacre which can be accessed here: https://www.ihrc.org.uk/file/02nov15gujaratongoinggenocide.pdf
Please uphold the general principles of human rights by condemning the perpetrators of such ghastly crimes against humanity, in the strongest manner possible. The least of this would be to cut off all political and economic ties with such individuals and their representatives. Other countries such as the US, UK, Oman and many European states have refused entry visas to Modi. Therefore it would not reflect positively on the international public image of Indonesia to welcome this individual or his representatives.
I urge you to withdraw the invitation and condemn Narendra Modi in the strongest manner possible for committing what many believe to be genocide of the Muslim community of Gujarat.
I look forward to hearing back from you regarding this urgent matter.
Yours sincerely,
