Ahmed is facing removal at 10.35pm tonight. He is from Sudan; an ethnic Black African whose people are suffering unspeakable persecution, if not genocide, at the hands of Sudanese militias, believed to have the backing of the Sudan government.
\”Men, women and children are being killed and villages are burnt and looted because the central government is allowing militias aligned to it to pursue what amounts to a strategy of forced displacement through the destruction of homes and livelihood of the farming populations of the region.\” Amnesty International
The Sudan government is facing worldwide protests over the bloodshed, which the United Nations says has displaced more than one million people. As many as 30,000 people have been killed. Alert Net 18/07/04
Sudan, has featured very prominently in the UK news recently as the largest humanitarian crisis in the world. UNHCR estimates that up to a million Black Africans are now displaced, many living in terrible conditions in Chad.
\”the world\’s worst humanitarian emergency\” – Hilary Benn, International Development Secretary
Ahmed is a member of the opposition Popular Congress Party (PCP) which makes him especially at risk of persecution, torture and possibly death if he is deported to Sudan. Since April the Sudanese government has detained 78 PCP members in rat-infested cells where they are subjected to torture.
Ahmed Bashari has already been subject to 3 periods of detention whilst in Sudan by state security. One of these periods of confinement was documented in the official memorandum submitted by a delegation of the PCP party leadership to United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in the Sudan on 11th March 2001.
Ahmed has exhausted the legal process of his asylum claim, which he made in September 2002 when he arrived in the UK. Since then Ahmed has established himself in the Sudanese community in Plymouth where he was living and is a well known figure in the Sudanese communities of Liverpool, Birmingham, Leicester and London. People from these communities are now campaigning to keep Ahmed in the UK.

Dear Mr Browne,
Re: Ahmed Ibrahim Bashari
I am writing to you regarding the case of Ahmed Ibrahim Bashari.
Ahmed is facing removal at 10.35pm tonight. He is an ethnic Black African from the Darfur region in Sudan whose people are suffering unspeakable persecution, if not genocide, at the hands of militias backed by the Sudanese government.
\”Men, women and children are being killed and villages are burnt and looted because the central government is allowing militias aligned to it to pursue what amounts to a strategy of forced displacement through the destruction of homes and livelihood of the farming populations of the region.\” Amnesty International
Sudan has featured very prominently in the news recently as the largest humanitarian crisis in the world. UNHCR estimates that up to a million Black Africans are now displaced, many living in terrible conditions in Chad.
Ahmed is a member of the opposition Popular Congress Party (PCP) which makes him especially at risk of persecution, torture and possibly death if he is deported to Sudan. 78 members of the PCP have been detained in rat-infested prisons since April 2004. Ahmed was previously arrested and detained without legal representation on three separate occasions in the space of two years before he came to the UK.
I am therefore asking you to exercise compassion in the case of Ahmed Ibrahim Bashari and allow him to remain in the UK.
Yours sincerely,
