This week IHRC had particular focus in Geneva with two panels being hosted at the United Nations. The first focused on Islamophobia and the crisis of democracy while at the second we presented a report on the Zaria massacres of earlier this year after a fact-finding mission to Nigeria. Videos of both panels will be available on our website shortly (we’ll let you know when!)

On Saturday we’re launching the first ‘Know Your Rights’ workshop of our Autumn/Winter 2014 series. It will take place at the IHRC Bookshop & Gallery at 4pm and will specifically cover the ‘stop and search’ powers used by the police. These workshops are vital, empowering and fun so please join us!

IHRC URGES BARBICAN TO PULL PLANS FOR RACIST EXHIBITION 

IHRC is backing an online petition calling on the London arts venue, the Barbican, to cancel a scheduled exhibition in which real-life actors play the roles of slaves to recreate black slaves in 19th century human zoos.

ANTI MUSLIM BROTHERHOOD CURBS WILL ENCOURAGE EGYPTIAN MILITARY REGIME 

Proposed measures designed to curb the activities of Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood in Britain are perverse and will only encourage the authoritarian military regime in Cairo to continue with its unrelenting campaign of repression against the political opposition.

IHRC TO HEAD ISLAMOPHOBIA PANEL DISCUSSION AT UN 

Organised by the Islamic Human Rights Commission the gathering will explore the extent to which hatred of Muslims has permeated everyday discourse and impacted on the formulation of public policy in western countries.

IHRC TO PRESENT FINDINGS OF NIGERIA MASSACRE FACT-FINDING MISSION AT UN 

On Friday 25 July, a peaceful demonstration in support of the Palestinians was brutally attacked by the Nigerian military. Some 33 people were killed, with some dying in custody after being savagely beaten. At least two more civilians were killed the next day in a similar attack on the funeral preparations. The panel reports the facts behind the killings.

IHRC has been empowering the community to know their rights since 1997. Our first workshop from our Autumn/Winter 2014 series launches on Saturday! The workshop will explore:

‘STOP AND SEARCH’ (AND MOST COMMONLY USED DAY-TO-DAY POLICE POWERS)

In this fun and interactive workshop we will cover the powers that police commonly use day to day, what options you can prepare to use in advance; and prepare you to consider what the police are likely to do if you exercise those options. One of the key issues that we will cover is observing the police, recording the police and talking to police. We will also cover the pros and cons of giving your name, address, date of birth, photo and other personal details, and the powers of PCSOs.

ISLAMIC EXTREMISTS: “WE ARE 100 PERCENT AGAINST THEM” – MUSLIM BROTHERHOOD 

Prime Minister David Cameron has asked Sir John Jenkins, ambassador to Saudi Arabia, to compile a full report on the Egyptian group’s London-based activities. However, they’ve been warned by the Islamic Human Rights Commission that any measures designed to curb the activities of the Brotherhood in Britain could be illegal, and would encourage the authoritarian military regime in Cairo.
