Following the success of last year’s course, IHRC is delighted to be holding more Decolonising the Mind courses led by Sandew Hira from the International Institute for Scientific Research in the Netherlands. Join Sandew Hira this Saturday and Sunday in Birmingham 28 and 29 September 2013 9am-5pm. The London course had to be rescheduled due to unforeseen cirucmtances we apologise for any inconvenience caused, you now have the option of choosing either the 19th or 20th October 2013 9am-5pm book your tickets now, more information below.

Press Release: Muslims are still the main victims of racism in the UK
Muslims are still being treated inequally regardless of their status as British citizens. A report published by the Runnymede Trust today confirms what IHRC has been saying for the last decade; Muslims are increasingly the main victims of racism. Over a decade of overt Islamophobia since the so-called war on terror, little has been done to assure Muslims of their status as British citizens or as equals.

COURSE: Critical Muslim Studies: Decolonial Struggles, Theology of Liberation and Islamic Revival
Faculty includes Tariq Ramadan, Ramon Grosfoguel-Salman Sayyid, Houria Bouteldja and IHRC’s Arzu Merali. Visionary Awakening – Artist’s Reception for Nasreen Jamal al-Lail
Visionary Awakening – Exhibition @ihrc 19 September 2013 until 18 February 2014. Young mixed media artist Nasreen Shaikh Jamal al-Lail’s solo exhibition Visionary Awakening launched on 18 September 2013 at the IHRC Gallery spaces in London.
The Artist’s Reception was attended by a wide spectrum of people, from journalists and other artists to community leaders and members and academics. Jamal al-Lail’s work on exhibition included her series Beyond the Veil that was a timely look at the objectification of Muslim women and challenged the narrative of the covering of both hair and face, using Kantian ethics.

Over the next 10 days we will, inshAllah, see co-ordinated joint protests and events across many countries around the world all in solidarity with the Hares Boys – five Palestinian children tortured and caged in a G4S secured Israeli prison facing life sentence for a crime that never happened! Activists in Argentina, Canada, Chile, France, UK and Uruguay will unite and be the voice of the 5 Palestinian children who have already been languishing in an Israeli dungeon for over 6 moths without a trial. Don’t forget this notorious case of US injustice
Dr. Aafia Siddiqui languishes in a US jail after a harrowing ordeal of kidnapping in Pakistan, detention in the notorious Bagram airbase, a prolonged period where no-one knows where she was followed by a sham trial and sentencing, over a period of almost a decade. More information on her case can be found on the Justice for Aafia page.

IHRC is urging campaigners to contact the prison where Lynne Stewart is held, and to Lynne herself to show support to this tireless campaigner for justice.
Lynne Stewart was the lawyer for Sheikh Omer Abderrahmane, and was convicted of aiding terrorism by sending messages to Abderrahmane’s supporters. She is in her 70s and has terminal cancer. Her campaign, Justice for Lynne Stewart is calling for her immediate compassionate release and IHRC urges campaigners to join the campaign. An action alert with model letters can be found below, as well as links to more information on her case, and the case of Sheikh Omer Abderrahmane.

Amidst the UK’s hot “niqab” debate, Nasreen Jamal al-Lail’s photos prove unapologetic and ironically relevant. Even during her teenage “goth phase”—underscored by lots of thick black eyeliner, of course—23-year old photographer Nasreen Shaikh Jamal al-Lail chose to sport a veil. She’s long been proud to coordinate it with her daily outfit; an extension of self-expression, as well as religious and cultural identity. Frustrated with the art world’s focus on why Muslim women don’t want to wear the veil, this Saudi-Brit’s first solo exhibition—and in particular, her Beyond the Veil series—exposes the other side of the coin. However, uneasy with group tags, Jamal al-Lail is quick to point out, ”I always personalize my artwork to my own experience, because I also don’t want to be the voice of the veiled women.”
