Forwarded Press Release – Prison inspector publishes deportation ‘concerns’ ahead of Pakistan flight tonight

Concerns about the escorts employed by the Home Office for deportation flights – Corporate Watch

Forwarded from Corporate Watch: The Chief Inspector of Prisons published today a report raising “a number of concerns about the overseas escorts” employed by the Home Office for deportation flights. The stark warning comes as 30 detainees at Yarl’s Wood are on hunger-strike in protest at a mass deportation to Pakistan this evening. Supporters from the ‘Movement for Justice’ (MFJ) are gathering outside the Home Office this afternoon, arguing that “five of the eight women facing deportation to Pakistan tonight have experienced or witnessed sexual harassment from male officers in Yarl’s Wood. The attempt to deport the witnesses is part of the Home Office’s desperate attempts to cover up the scandal”.

How complaining about the media doesn’t work

How complaints procedure reinforce structural racism in the media.

IHRC has argued for many years about the need for there to be a sea change in the way media operates in the UK.  In its seminal work The British Media and Muslim Representation: The Ideology of Demonisationby Saied R. Ameli, Syed Mohammed Marandi, Sameera Ahmed, Seyfeddin Kara and Arzu Merali (2000), the authors argue that just as views on other minorities, whether ethnic or religious, or defined by gender or sexuality, so too a significant shift is required vis a vis Muslims but also other groups who still face direct and indirect discrimination, demonisation and marginalisation by the media in the way they are represented.

IHRC: Muslims are main victims of racism in UK

Muslims in Britain have been the main victims of racism since the West’s so-called war on terror began in 2001, according to Islamic Human Rights Commission (IHRC).

IHRC referred to a recent study by race equality thinktank the Runnymede Trust, according to which racial discrimination is still widespread in the workplace for those who come from minority backgrounds.

“For a long time now we have been saying that Islamophobia is used as a veneer for racism and xenophobia, and this report confirms it,” said Chair of IHRC.Massoud Shadjareh.
