Press Release: Schedule 7 is a terrorism law too far
The Islamic Human Rights Commission (IHRC) is urging the government to repeal Schedule 7 of the Terrorism Act when MPs debate making changes to it on Monday 14 October.
The controversial power was thrust into the spotlight last August when it was used to detain David Miranda, the Brazilian partner of a Guardian journalist, as he transited London’s Heathrow Airport on his way home to Rio de Janeiro. Mr Miranda was interrogated by six officers and his laptop, mobile phone, video game, and memory cards confiscated under the legislation.

The amendments to Schedule 7 Terrorism Act 2000
IHRC’s concerns over the amendments in the ANTI-SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR, CRIME AND POLICING BILL 2013
Schedule 7 to the Anti-social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Bill 2013[1] makes a number of changes to Schedule 7 of the Terrorism Act 2000 (‘the act’). In this submission we argue for one change above all others: repeal.
The bill has passed the Committee stage and is scheduled for the Report Stage on Monday 14 October 2013. Therefore an amendment to repeal must be tabled by this Friday 11 October.

Peaceful Vigil Marks a Year since Extradition of Talha Ahsan
Free speech and expression is the foundation of a free and democratic society, but they have been the first victim in the post 9/11 period. Immediately after 9/11, Arabs, and Muslims were required to condemn over and over the terrorist attacks as if they had anything themselves to do with it. Furthermore, being immigrants’ communities they were forced into a mode of assimilation motivated by self-protection due to verbal and physical attacks; rather than a normative process of adjustment influenced by time in the country, jobs, education, marriage, family and economic conditions. For Arabs, and Muslims the ability to speak freely in the context of the American society has been greatly limited and their freedom of expression is only theory. Can an Arab, Muslim or Asian speak freely about US war on terrorism, the war on Afghanistan and the massive arrests of people in this country?
From Lynne: A Message for October 8, my 74 Birthday
A Message for October 8, my 74 Birthday.
It is certainly sobering to be celebrating the start of my 74 year mired down in this prison. It is even more so when there is my life line that must be considered. Nonetheless, I remain my ebullient self and face my fight and my future with optimism. Part of the reason for this is the wonderful mail I receive daily from people all over the U.S. and the world. From Tasmania to Tel Aviv (!?) people write and tell me of the role I play and have played in their lives. It is overwhelming sometimes.
Extradition a Year on: The Hypocrisy that doesn’t end
October 5 marked the first anniversary of the extradition of the British Muslim duo Talha Ahsan and Babar Ahmad to the United States to face charges relating to their alleged support of “terrorists” in Afghanistan and Chechnya.
The pair are accused of running the Azzam.com website, which carried news and reports from the battlefields of Bosnia, Chechnya and later Afghanistan, as a fundraising and recruiting vehicle for extremists. Both men have pleaded not guilty in the US to the charges against them.
Bahrainis subjected to torture in prisons
In one of the most outrageous acts of revenge a victims of police brutality has been detained for 60 days. Haidar Al Shughul is the victim in a short video clippe commonly known as “The video of the slap”. In the clip Mr Al Shughul, his child in his arms, approaches a policeman in uniform to ask for information. The police immediately slaps him for no reason whatsoever. When the victim was slapped again, the child started to cry and the man walked away, having been humiliated and abused. As usual, the Alkhalifa interior ministry said it would “investigate” the incident. Instead of arresting the policeman, the victim was arrested and taken to the torture dungeons.

An activity book for bereaved Muslim Siblings
This book helps children make sense of their experience following the death of a sibling, and offers a way of honouring their memory and celebrating their life. It helps the child to understand more about their thoughts and feelings by answering some of the questions they may have, and affords a springboard for discussion and discovery which will aid parents in understanding aspects of their child’s world, their behaviour and needs.
As children work through the book they will learn about themselves, about life and the Islamic perspective of death. In turn, this will insha-Allah, help
Mansa Musa was the king of Mali. Located in western Africa, Mali became one of the largest empires during the time of Musa’s rule. Musa helped his empire grow in size and culture by encouraging the arts, literature, and architecture.
